Exciting news: a little while ago, the Senate passed House Bill 99 on a vote of 40-2 - after voting 25-17 to remove the weakening amendments put on in the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning!
This means that the Senate has passed House Bill 99 in the same strong form in which it passed the House 66-3. The bill is now on its way to the governor for her signature.
The successful passage of this bill is a testament to the power of your voices in the legislative process.
Since the session began, New Mexican like you have sent 11,047 messages through Think New Mexico's Action Center urging your legislators to pass substantive medical malpractice reform. Many legislators referred to all the emails they had received from their constituents when they explained why they were supporting the bill.
House Bill 99 directly addresses the primary reason why so many doctors are considering leaving New Mexico or retiring early; our unbalanced medical malpractice laws. The passage of this legislation gives them a reason to stay.
We are deeply grateful to the bill's lead sponsor, Representative Christine Chandler (D-Los Alamos) and primary co-sponsor Representative Gail Armstrong (R-Magdalena), as well as Governor Lujan Grisham and the coalition of dozens of organizations including doctor and patient groups, chambers of commerce and unions, Indivisible chapters from across the state, and many more who fought so hard for this reform.
And we're not done yet! We're still working hard to pass several other reforms before the session concludes on Thursday at noon.
